TEASERS
He who would travel happily must travel light. (A. de Saint-Exupery)

Well, the Blaine Jazz Festival is week on its way to a week in the past, just as last year's has drifted pastward to almost a year and a week in the past. It's amazing to think that I was only about 9,412 days old when I left for it, and now I've grown all the way up to 9,424.
The vocal jazz group was just a pond of vocal talent this year, and they had attitudes to match. My job was in no way unpleasant and in tons of ways pleasant. The students (you know who you are, and so do other people) did awesome solos with Greta Matassa's backup band and as an ensemble.

(Oh, and I should also mention that I served as quasi-unofficial advisor to Douglas Zwick who taught his first theory class ever, which I'm sure paralleled my own experience doing the same thing a couple of years ago. Finally, my current roommate Lacey Oleson did a sprightly job not only as the festival's official cook, but also as a singer and a giver of swing dance lessons on the side.)
On Squalicum: I was finally called back for an interview during the festival. I was informed-- on Tuesday-- that they hoped I was available to come in on Thursday, and that a mini-lesson would be part of the interview. Since I was literally staying and lodging in Blaine all week, and my vocal jazz met at the requested interview time, and I had no vehicle, I replied with an explanation of my situation and said I'd like to ask first whether another interview time was possible. The PR lady said she's forward my message to Squalicum's new principal.
Cut to a week later, when I e-mailed the lady back for an update. She referred me to the principal, who (politely) informed me that they'd already gone ahead and awarded the job to one of the candidates. Huh. I'd meant to convey that I wanted to know whether they could schedule a new time, not that I was withdrawing from the interview process.
So, that was the bad news. The good news was that I found out within the hour that the job was earned by none other than Mr. Andy Marshall. If I'd not learned that, I'd have written here that I hoped the interviewing committee had the clairvoyance to select someone capable. If you've ever worked with Andy, then I'm sure you'll agree that he'll be a star at Squalicum within the first year. Students there: you're going to love him, and I'm really happy he-- I think-- changed his mind and applied.
I wrote for my Facebook status that I've felt really fortunate for the last two years to be making my entire living musically. Some of it's actually been video work, too, about which I've no complaints. Now, I'm working on Snoopy!!! at Western with Gregory Pulver on the director's stick, and a cast that's so much fun to work with that we all... crack up a lot. And that's that. The show plays in the first half of August and it'll be really good, so come see.
"Not sure what I'm doing up here, Mary. Just felt like I had to come. Elton Ridge -- It's where you told me you'd marry me. Long time ago.
But now ... no one's real happy with me right now. Guess I can't blame 'em. I wouldn't even give you a funeral.
But how can you have a funeral when you've seen what I've seen?
How can you shake the hands of family and friends, catching sorrow in their eyes as you bury a secret a little deeper in your gut?
How do you stand alongside a man of God who's reading from The Bible and talking about heaven and peace on earth?
You weren't in peace, Mary. That much I know.
As for the rest of it --
-- I'm about to find out."

It's time for an icon dump! (Oh, how I hate that phrase!)
These icons have all been sitting on my laptop for an extended period of time, whether it be weeks or even months. Some were contest entries (Many of which placed either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd) while others are part of batches I started but never had the time or motivation to finish. I know I normally post more 'organized' entries on a specific theme, but I thought there would be no harm in posting these before I delete the majority of them. Hopefully you can find something you like here :D
Please Note: There are some 'alternatives' for certain icons as I'll usually try a few different styles or techniques before entering an icon into a contest.
